If you were asked what is included in chassis service, would you be able to list all the components that make up your vehicle’s chassis? A simple explanation is that the chassis is the bottom framework of your vehicle which houses the running gear, engine, transmission, driveshaft, differential, shocks, axles, tires, and the components that fasten them all together. Because these components are located under the bottom of your vehicle, they are not very accessible so it is easy to forget about them until a problem develops.

There are some warning signs that all is not well under car:

  • Excessive vibration felt in the car: Vibration is amplified because if the wheel bearings or shock absorber are worn out and upset the balance of the tires, the car begins to vibrate more.
  • Vehicle steers to the side: This could be caused by brakes wearing out, the air pressure in the tires is uneven, and the wheels or rods have been damaged.
  • Tires do not grip the road properly: They are most likely out-of-balance or the tread has worn unevenly.
  • Screech or squeal when stopping your car: These sounds often indicate worn brake pads or failing shocks.
  • Knock and rumble: If these sounds are coming from the suspension, this indicates a problem with one of the rubber seals, bushings, or joints.

So what does chassis repair look like? Because the chassis is made up of many elements, the repair is not easy. Your mechanic can “lift” your car to inspect the condition of each component of the chassis and diagnose what the problem is and what needs to be repaired. Chassis repair could include just one of the components listed above, or there could be several issues to resolve.
